Hyundai has come through for Sonata owners who have been waiting for the Apple CarPlay feature the automaker promised more than a year ago.
A free downloadable update is available for properly equipped 2015 and 2016 Sonatas at MyHyundai.com
CarPlay is an increasingly popular feature that makes many smartphone features available through a vehicle’s touch screen and voice recognition. It reduces driver distraction, enhancing safety.
“I just completed the upgrade, and it’s working great,” Sonata owner Jason Springel wrote in an e-mail. The download is fast and easy, Springel said.
For less technically savvy owners, the update will be available for an installation fee at all Hyundai dealers in June. The fee will vary depending the car and how long it takes to upload the data, but Hyundai recommends $50. The update will take 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the vehicle.
The upload also works with properly equipped 2015 Genesis; 2016 Genesis, Elantra and Tucson, and 2017 Tucson, Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport models.
Hyundai also plans to roll out updates to CarPlay and Android Auto — compatible with Google phones — on other 2016 vehicles shortly.
