The second-generation North America Ford Escort appeared in 1991, and was a sister car to the Kia Sephia, Mazda 323, and Mercury Tracer. It was powered by an 88hp 1.9-liter Ford-designed four-cylinder engine, although some higher-spec models were fitted with a Mazda-designed 127hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder. Between 1993 and 1995, the Escort was offered at one price, no matter whether buyers wanted a 3-door, 5-door, sedan or station wagon. In 1997, the third-generation Escort appeared, this time as only a four-door sedan or five-door station wagon, and powered by a 2,.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This version of the Escort continued until 2002.
